In the southwestern part of Macedonia, we can visit the national park Pelister. This beautiful park is spread over the northern part of Baba mountain, which is the southernmost mountain in the Balkans that has an alpine character. This national park is the oldest in Macedonia, and was first protected by law in 1948. The authorities at that time saw the uniqueness of the region and intervened wisely. In it, that is, on Mount Baba, there are several peaks that exceed the limit of 2,000 meters. First of all, the highest is 2,601 meters, and that is the Pelister peak. All those peaks are separated from each other by several deep valleys. The park also has a tourist-recreational zone, which is especially popular in winter during the ski season, but also in summer when people enjoy excursions and walks.
The national park has its own wealth. It is full of untouched beauty and interesting phenomena, unusual formations as traces of the past, with a specific geological structure, rarely seen vegetation that is characteristic of the park. The park has favorable and specific conditions for the creation of its unique natural wealth.
What is most impressive on Baba Mountain, that is, in the national park, are the stone rivers. These are actually stacked rocks of granite and quartz, which slowly over the years slid down and created a kind of currents. The sliding took place due to the freezing and thawing of the rocks at the time when there was a snowy winter at the top of the mountain. And not only rivers, there are stone seas too!?! These are actually relief forms that were created by crushing the rocks from the ice, only they stayed in place and created huge spaces with stones and rocks. There is a lot of fun for geographers.
The forests of Pelister National Park contain unique trees and plants. Among the eighty-eight types of trees in Pelister, you can find the Molika tree, which there is no chance to see anywhere else in the world (except on a few more mountains in the Balkans). It is a five-needle pine that reaches its peak of evolution in Pelister and can only be seen above 600 meters above sea level. Molika is a very durable tree, it can withstand even Siberian temperatures, and in Pelister you can come across molikas that are two centuries old.
